Upward Bound Students

What is UBCL?

Upward Bound Classic is a pre-college program for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to prepare them for education beyond high school. UBCL seeks to assist students who demonstrate an academic potential for higher education and who meet federal income guidelines and students whose parents do not have a bachelor’s degree. Please download our brochure.

Mission Statement

To promote postsecondary education and student empowerment of area low-income and first generation high school students.

Who is Eligible for Services?

To receive free services, a student must

  • Show a strong interest in preparing for and attending college
  • Be enrolled in public school in Montgomery, Polk, or Scott county
  • Meet qualification guidelines
  • Show a willingness to commit to the program


No cost exists to participate in UBCL or UBMS. Both programs are funded 100% by a grant from the U.S.

Schedule of Activities

Academic Year

  • Weekly sessions - Students meet after school one hour per week with UB staff. Students can expect the following activities:
    • Character building and personal assessments
    • Academic guidance/study skills
    • Leadership development
    • College admissions assistance
    • Financial aid assistance
    • Scholarship searches
  • Saturday Workshops - Both UBLC and UBMS meet approximately two Saturdays per month. Students can expect the following activities:Tutoring Services - Free tutoring services are available at each student's school.
    • Career exploration
    • Educational and cultural trips
    • Math/science workshops
    • ACT preparation
    • ACT tests junior/senior year
    • Campus tours
  • Tutoring Services - Free tutoring services are available at each student's school.


  • Summer Academy - Rising 9th –11th graders participate in a six-week summer program to prepare for the following academic year. Students will have the opportunity to attend campus tours as well.
  • Rising 12th grade students and graduates typically have the opportunity to enroll in college coursework.
